Latoya Nwugballa

Global Immigration Consultant

My name is Latoya Nwugballa, and I would like to share a little bit of my immigration story with you. I am the child of immigrant parents who moved from Kingston, Jamaica to the United States in the early 70s.

I was born in Nassau, Bahamas, and at the age of nine months I was sent to grow up in Jamaica with my grandparents and siblings until I moved to the US at seven. At that young age, I was unaware of the stress related to high attorney fees and the lack of immigration literacy faced by my family members and close family friends. As a young lady, I often heard about their concerns over being reunited with their children and spouses.

The immigration process was something the Caribbean community found difficult but had to go through, as it was common practice to have children raised in Jamaica while parents resided in the United States to provide for them.

It wasn't until I grew older and witnessed my father's experience with his naturalization process that I realized how challenging the immigration journey was. I saw Many immigrants work long hours to save money to pay an attorney to file for their children or spouses.

There was one particular immigration lawyer who seemed to be a popular choice in the New York Caribbean community. His name was frequently mentioned when it came to immigration. I met him years later and felt that he did not listen to me or answer my questions, which made me uncomfortable with his representation.

As a result, I conducted extensive research to discover what was needed to successfully get an approval without mistakes or delays and prepared the Naturalization application myself.

That was over 25 years ago, that experience sparked my interest in preparing immigration filings.

I found that I had a strong desire to work with individuals and families in the community and help reunite them with their loved ones for less than traditional preparation fees and with a customer care approach, making the process easier for them.

Several years later, I met and married a Nigerian Pastor. I managed the preparation and filing of his fiancé visa and naturalization process. He is now a proud American citizen.

Immigration is not an industry where knowledge remains static. It is highly regulated, with constantly changing and processes influenced by new administrations. This requires a commitment to stay compliant and ensure that customers' requests are handled in their best interest. Although I have a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a professional dual diploma as a certified paralegal and litigation specialist, I continuously enhance my knowledge in the immigration industry by investing in education to better serve the people.

Over the years, I have obtained specialized immigration training, licensure as an immigration assistance provider, and membership with the Wynter Law Academy for non-lawyers.

My passion has led to a fulfilling career!!!
